Food Behind Bars
Food Behind Bars is the UK’s first ever charity dedicated to transforming prison food. This podcast is hosted by its founder, Lucy Vincent. It looks at the issues currently surrounding food in our prisons and the associated long-term impacts.
We know that poor diet can impact everything from physical wellbeing to behaviour to mental health, and consequently there have been campaigns for many years to improve nutrition in schools and hospitals. But this has not happened in the same way in prisons. Lucy brings several guests onto her podcast to discuss how prison kitchens can be creative with a limited budget; the pro-social community aspect of eating together; how good nutrition can support a reduction in violent behaviour and increased engagement in rehabilitation and much more.
The podcast also discusses issues around the social perceptions of people in prison. Improving nutrition and food quality is often difficult when there is a public opinion that those in our prisons deserve to be fed nothing but bread and water.
Overall, this podcast poses a really interesting argument about the potential for food to be transformative as part of a person’s prison journey.
