An update on Sycamore Tree

It is with disappointment that we share with you the news that the National Framework for Interventions (NFI) panel has rejected our appeal and confirmed its original decision that Sycamore Tree does not meet the current evidence-informed standards required for endorsement.

While all of us at Prison Fellowship (PF) will be hugely saddened by this outcome, we remain steadfast in our belief in the transformative power of the Sycamore Tree programme. We rejoice in the fact that, over the last 25 years, the programme has positively impacted thousands of lives.

Many hundreds of you, directly connected with the delivery of Sycamore Tree, have seen this impact first-hand.

We have helped over 40,000 learners grow not only in understanding the impact of crime and the experience of their victims, but also in understanding that change, forgiveness and a new future are possible.

Together, we brought grace and restoration to places where revenge and despair had been prevalent. It has been a real privilege to have been part of this life changing work, and we are immensely proud of the legacy it will have.

As one of our learners said:

‘It made me realise you can change and there are people out there to help you. It made me think about who I have affected and how they feel. I will leave here feeling I can change.’

We are continuing constructive discussions with key stakeholders within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and proactively considering how key content and principles from Sycamore Tree can still have a place within our prisons, in new and meaningful ways. We are committed to exploring every available avenue to ensure this powerful work can continue to reach those who need it most.

We also want to reassure you that all of PF’s other programmes and activities continue as normal. Our mission to show Christ’s love to people in prison remains as strong as ever. We continue to serve faithfully through our range of other ministries, while also exploring new opportunities as part of our ongoing strategic vision for the future.

Thank you for your continued support, dedication and prayers. Your involvement continues to be vital as we navigate this moment and continue to move forward, ready to take hold of the new opportunities God presents – our God who ‘does immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.’

“I can honestly say that I never had as much satisfaction when I worked as I do now as a volunteer.” — Arthur, Chaplaincy Support volunteer

Volunteer with PF

Volunteers are the life-blood of our organisation, and what they do in the lives of those in prison and as they pray, is incredibly valuable. If you are looking to use your time to support some of the most marginalised people in our society to transform their lives, then volunteering could be for you.
